- Raw co-occurrence says that common words appear together a lot (e.g. βtheβ and βandβ).
- PMI asks βHow surprising is it that they appear togetherβ.
PMI Formula:
- If and occur together more often than youβd expect by chance PMI is positive.
- If they co-occur less often than chance PMI is negative.
- If they are independent PMI = 0.
